After five years of break, the Great Silk Wayinternational tournament was successfully organized in Baku from 23 – 29 March. This elite men and women boxing event lasted five competition days. Boxers from eleven countries took part this year, fighting in 13 men’s and 5 women’s weight categories. 121 boxers from Azerbaijan, Hungary, Iran, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Poland, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan fought for the medals in Azerbaijan’s capital city.
The Azerbaijan Boxing Federation once again proved their ability to organize high level events. After last year’s Heydar Aliyev Cup and Abbas Aghalarov Cup, among juniors and youth boxers, this edition of Great Silk Waywas organized at an even higher level. It was a strong tournament, with a lot of good quality boxing that spectators could enjoy in Baku.
The best boxer is featherweight Shamil Akerov from Azerbaijan, and the best R&J is his countryman Nasraddin Mammadov. The most successful team is Uzbekistan. They were led by one of the best boxers in the world Bakhodir Jalolov, and won 5 gold medals, 7 silver and 6 bronze. Second place is team Azerbaijan, and third place is team Kazakhstan.
